CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.1 BACKGROUND OF STUDY
A Student Information Management System (SIMS) is a software application that helps educational institutions manages student data. It typically includes features like student registration, attendance tracking, grading, and communication tools. SIMS aims to streamline administrative tasks and enhance overall efficiency in managing student information. Important aspects include data security, user-friendly interfaces, and adaptability to the specific needs of the educational institution. When implementing a SIMS, it's crucial to consider scalability for future growth and integration capabilities with other educational systems. Designing a Student Information Management System (SIMS) requires thorough background study. Start by understanding the current manual processes, user needs, and school requirements. Explore existing SIMS solutions, analyze their features, and identify gaps. Consider data security, scalability, and integration with other systems. Research educational trends, compliance standards, and best practices in SIMS development. Engage with stakeholders, including students, teachers, and administrators, to gather insights and requirements. This comprehensive background study will guide the effective development and implementation of the SIMS.
1.2 STATEMENT OF PROBLEM
The present manual method of keeping files and records has been found by research to be disadvantageous. This is due to the problems which are identified as follows:
●Loss of files and records by theft.
●Loss of files and records by fire disaster and other natural catastrophe that could possibly occur without giving a chance to retrieve these files.
●Information Overload.
●The old system of filing is not portable.
●Difficulty in the search for data and information about an individual.
●Accessibility issues experienced by a staff or data administrator
●Difficulty in getting relationship(s) between data for an individual.
The ever-changing trend in technology brought the necessity for the automation of everything from paper-and-pen based to absolute computer domination (Mokhtar & Rahman, 2017). The overwhelming emergence of computers paved the way to easier access of information that leads to increased production, efficiency and reliability.
1.3 AIM AND OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
